Palacio de la Magdalena & Península de Magdalena
This famous palace is diversely styled, with neoclassic elements reflected through chimneys and windows, French elements marked by the curving of the main staircase and building’s body, and a slight touch of Santander specialities too. It is further surrounded by a beautiful garden and is a great place to go for a coastal walk between the marine breezes. The Peninsula of La Magdalena is located beside the palace and is a nice topographical projection of the Bay of Santander. There are numerous attractions in this area, and can make you spend an entire day in this region.
The Cathedral is situated on a hill where Abbey of San Emeterio and San Celedonio had once stood. This area had marked the birth of the city which is why makes this place a prime attraction. As you get to the lower part of the Cathedral, you will see the Church of El Cristo. It is the oldest monument of the city and the spectacular Roman remains of hot spring resort were discovered here. It is a small church which will let you see the three naves (main body of a church) which are separated by pillars styled soberly. The Cathedral tower is sturdy enough to be compared to a fortress. It remains from the 13th century and was announced to be the Property of Cultural Interest in 1931. The latest construction had taken place in 1941, after which visitors increased in number too.
This is known as the ‘arcaded square’ which happens to be busy all day long. It is located centrally and the entire area had been rebuilt in the neoclassic style after it withstood a major fire in 1941. This area comes alive during festivities and important events. There are Festival of Music, Dance of Santander, etc. which take place each year in this area. It happens to be the main square of music in Spain, which is why every visitor gets an essence every time they visit.
Gran Casino del Sardinero
Doesn’t matter if you can play at the Casino, but witnessing the interior makes it a prime tourist’s spot. This is one of those areas which you must not miss out as it surely gives you a different experience. The casino had been built when Santander started becoming very popular for summer vacations. There are a variety of games like poker, blackjack, roulette, etc. played here. It further includes a slot machine room, a cafeteria, and a bar. Parque de la Naturaleza de Cabárceno (Cabarceno Natural Park)
This area covers about 750 hectares and that makes it the biggest in Europe. The open area lets you awe at the animals which live merrily. They have semi-liberty and are not locked in small cages. It is a great place to come with family as you can enjoy walking by friendly ostriches, elegant jaguars, majestic lions and impressive rhinos. There are about 118 species which dwell in the park, and the best part is the animal cubs! The animals are free to reproduce naturally and live like they’d have at an unattended forest. There are numerous birds which are seen by the Acebo Lake. Take out a day to visit the entire area since the fascinating surroundings needs some time to sink in. The amazing combination of flora and fauna lets you spend a delightful day at Santander.
