If you plan to drop in for 1 day and you want the best of the Gran Canaria Island, you should opt to stay at the capital city! This great city not only offers you beaches but also gets you involved in cultural activities.
Start your tour from 10 a.m. as you hit the oldest area in the city. This is Vegueta district which has several cobbled streets and are lined with traditionally designed houses. Their architecture will reflect the real essence of Canaries, and that is where you fulfill one aspect of touring a place! Stroll through streets of Balcones or Espíritu Santo till you get to Plaza de Santa Ana square. This is the place where you’d get to see the famous Santa Ana Cathedral.
The best way to blend into the city and know more about the Gran Canaria is by mingling with the locals. The Vegueta market can let you have one such opportunity where you get to do that. Mornings are the best will when the hustle bustle is low and you get to taste some typical dishes with cheese!
When it is around 12:30 you can take some time out for shopping in the business areas like Mayor de Triana. There are Modernist buildings around and that’ll reflect the modern times at Las Palmas for you. From crafts to boutiques you will get a lot to carry back the essence of the island. This area is filled with cafes where you can try some local tapas or have a proper lunch. Canary Islands are best for their papas arrugadas, which are boiled baby potatoes added with the spicy sauce mojo, and at times accompanied with poached fish of sancocho.
Continue to the Plaza del Cairasco square where you get to see lovely buildings which house Gabinete Literario cultural centre. It is worth going through at least one exhibition which runs inside. If you have some more time to spend, get to the San Telmo Park, especially if you have children travelling with you. Let them play at the park while you and your spouse sit at a table close to Modernist pavilion. You can also get to the small shrine just beside.
