Nerja has lots of festivals. In February, the town celebrates Carnival and in March or April, depending on when Easter or Semana Santa, known as Holy Week falls, there are celebrations too. San Juan, in June, sees barbeques taking place along the beaches.
Virgen del Carmen festival
The Virgen del Carmen festival takes place every year on the 16th July. A statute of the Virgin Mary is carried through the streets, put onto a fishing boat and is then taken out to sea.
Festival de la Cueva
Classical music concerts of the Festival de la Cueva take place in the Nerja Caves in July.
Feria de Nerja
The Nerja Festival or Feria de Nerja takes places for 4 days in October. Lots of people take the time off work and the Spanish celebrate with street parties. The fairground arrives and women and girls dress in traditional flamenco dresses.
On January 5th, known as Kings Day, the Three Wise Men, Reyes Magos arrive bearing gifts for the children.
