United Nations Environment Programme

SIDS-related mandate/activities:

The role of UNEP, as the UN agency responsible for the environment, is described in the BPoA as follows: “UNEP, taking into account development perspectives, should continue to provide policy guidance and coordination in the field of environment, including in the implementation of the BPoA”. In the Chapter on Coastal and Marine Resources the UNEP Regional Seas Programme and the scheme that later became the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA), are called to assist SIDS with the development and implementation of integrated coastal zone management plans, to improve international coordination in that field and to develop strategies to prevent further marine and coastal degradation.

UNEP supports the implementation of the Mauritius Strategy by providing leadership through the six cross-cutting thematic priorities of its Medium-term Strategy (2010-2013), i.e., climate change, disasters and conflicts, ecosystem management, environmental governance, harmful substances and hazardous waste, and resource efficiency.
