SIDS-related mandate/activities:
OHRLLS was created in 2001. The key functions of the Office of the High Representative regarding Small Island Developing State (SIDS) as recommended in the Secretary-General's report A/56/645 are:
- To support, as appropriate, the coordinated follow-up of the implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of SIDS (BPoA);
- To undertake appropriate advocacy work in favour of SIDS in partnership with the relevant parts of the United Nations as well as with the civil society, media, academia and foundations; and
To assist in mobilizing international support and resources for the implementation of the Programme of Action for the SIDS.
