For centuries, the turtle has been a key figure and symbol of Pacific island cultures and traditions. Its antiquity symbolizes the durability of Pacific island customs and traditions; its spirit the subject of many myths and legends and part of Pacific history passed down through generations.

SPREP launches 2006 Pacific Year of the Sea Turtle

Apia 1 March – The 2006 Pacific Year of the Sea Turtle was launched today, with a renewed call to save this marine icon from extinction.

Facilitated by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), the Year of the Sea Turtle campaign aims to boost turtle numbers by promoting community conservation of turtle nesting sites, strengthening national legislation and policies to encourage effective management, and fostering partnerships for long-term conservation.

SPREP’s Acting Director, Vitolio Lui, has urged countries and territories to participate in the campaign in an effort to reverse the rapid decline in numbers.

Wetlands Day targets poverty

File[Nature Conservation] Organizers of the annual World Wetlands Day are targeting the fight against poverty as the theme for this year’s event: today!

SPREP says this year’s theme focuses on how properly managed wetlands can reduce poverty.

National agencies, the private sector, schools and communities around the region are being encouraged to organize activities, centered on the poverty theme.
 

SPREP backs Pacific Islands for phasing-out ozone-depleting substances

File[Pollution Prevention]Pacific Island Countries have been given a major boost in their efforts to phase-out ozone-deleting substances (ODS), in particular chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). This will assist in meeting their requirements under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

A regional meeting of the Pacific’s ozone officers held in Suva, Fiji Islands this week (23-27 January 2006) reviews the implementation of the world’s only ‘regional-scale’ ODS phase-out strategy approved by the Protocol’s Multilateral Fund.
