Training

The SPC Statistics Programme has been servicing the statistical needs of its member countries for over 25 years. Having been developed with those needs in mind, the Programme's training courses and workshops have a very strong Pacific Islands orientation.

The Statistics Programme has two main training courses - the Statistical Operations and Procedures course (SOAP) and the Data Analysis and Report Writing course (DA&RW), supplemented by other specialised training courses.

The SOAP course is designed to teach participants how to collect statistical data. The DA&RW course focuses on analysing statistical data and producing a report based on that data. The specialised training courses are developed as resources permit at both the sub-regional and country level. Specialised courses are designed for national statistics office staff, whereas the SOAP and Data Analysis courses are appropriate for any government employee who works with statistics.

Other training courses are developed as required and when funding permits.

The SPC has also been able to fund occasional training attachments based in Noumea for staff from national Statistics Offices in member countries. In 1999 the SPC hosted seven three-week training attachments with funding from the UK, the ADB and the Forum Secretariat.
