Fish Identification Cards
for the Live Reef Fish Trade

Online Information

More information is available online from the Live Reef Fish Information Bulletin #9

The Live Reef Food Fish Trade (LRFFT) Awareness Workshop held in Papua New Guinea in 2001 agreed on a a list of awareness materials to be developed, including Fish ID Cards for field workers, fishermen and industry staff.

These cards have just been published by SPC as part of the Pacific Live Reef Fish Trade Initiative.

Pacific Live Reef Fish Trade Initiative

The Fisheries Information Section has been actively involved, together with The Nature Conservancy, International Marinelife Alliance and the World Resources Institute, in the production of a series of awareness materials developed for the Pacific Live Reef Fish Trade Initiative.

The section has just received the fish identification cards that are the first materials to be made available among this series that will include: fact and information sheets, videos, a Powerpoint presentation and a technical manual.

Awareness Materials for the Live Reef Fish Trade

These flip cards present sixteen of the main fish species targeted by the trade in the Pacific Region, including three species of wrasses and thirteen species of groupers.

Each card include a full-colour picture of one species, with its scientific name, common English and Hong Kong names, and a blank space for local names to be added by locals. It also contains a short description of the species and gives information on its biology and ecology, as well as its distribution in the Indo-Pacific.

For Field Workers, Fishermen and Industry Staff

The cards have been printed on plastic and are fully waterproof.

They should be handy for field workers, fishermen and industry staff confronted to the live reef fish trade.
