Tuna Fishery Statistics

Statistics and Monitoring Overview

Statistics and monitoring has been a core activity of the OFP since its inception in 1981. In the early 1980s, the main priority of the OFP was the establishment of a regional catch and effort database based primarily on catch and effort logsheets provided to SPC by member countries and territories. While this remains a key function, the activities have expanded in several directions, including the development of data collection forms, support of port sampling programmes and observer programmes, compilation of annual catch estimates by fleet, compilation of catch and effort data grouped by time-area from DWFNs, publication of the Regional Tuna Bulletin and the Tuna Fishery Yearbook. These activities can be grouped under data collection, compilation and dissemination. The OFP also supports fisheries database systems in SPC member countries and territories and provides support to the Standing Committee on Tuna and Billfish (SCTB) through the SCTB Statistics Working Group.

In-Country area

Member Countries restricted access

The purpose of the Country web area  is to provide each member country with a readily accessible means of reviewing the status of data provisions and processing at SPC, viewing and downloading summaries of the latest catch and effort, and port sampling data or downloading the latest tuna fishery software and databases, as required.

This initiative mean that (i) there is no delay in accessing information that previously required an email/FAX communication, or (in the case of catch data) distribution of a CD via the postal system, and (ii) access to these pages is possible anywhere, as long as the email/password details for the county are known. The Country pages are confidential and are only available to the concerned country through a secure entry screen requiring the correct email/password identification to be input.

Tuna Fishery Data Catalog

The Oceanic Fisheries Programme (OFP) of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) is responsible for compiling regional tuna fisheries data. The main database maintained by the OFP comprises all catch and effort data received and processed by the Statistics Section. Extensive holdings of length frequency data, unloadings data, data from tagging programmes and data collected during observer trips are also maintained.
