Marine Resources Division
Today as in the past, marine resources retain their traditional importance for the diet, cultures and economies of Pacific Island peoples. The commercial use of living marine resources has increased to rival the combined value of all the region's other renewable resources. For many Island countries and territories, fishery resources offer the greatest potential for economic development, given their control of enormous maritime zones.

THE REGIONAL MARITIME PROGRAMME…

ensures Pacific Island countries adopt international, regional and national policies affecting he maritime sector that will result in safer ships and cleaner seas.

  • Maritime legal advisory services

  • Maritime training advisory services

THE OCEANIC FISHERIES PROGRAMME…
provides countries with the scientific information and advice necessary to rationally manage fisheries exploiting the region's resources of tuna, billfish and related species.

  • Statistics and monitoring

  • Stock assessment and modelling

  • Tuna ecology and biology

THE COASTAL FISHERIES PROGRAMME…

provides a regional support service that assists Pacific Islanders in identifying the status, and optimising the long-term social and economic value of small-scale fisheries and aquatic resources in Pacific Island waters.

  • Fisheries training

  • Post-harvest fisheries

  • Fisheries development

  • Community fisheries

  • Reef fishery assessment and management
