The
present structure of Land Resources Division grew out of the
Agriculture Programme made out of three projects, Plant
Protection, Animal Health and Production and Agricultural
Information. Expansion was instituted later to accommodate a new
Forestry Programme and the EU DSAP project. The Land Resources
Division is managed by the Director, Aleki Sisifa.
Now
LRD comprises of 9 teams:
The Agriculture projects implement
practical activities in the major
areas of:

Animal health and Production (Legislation,
international relations, disease
surveys, clinical services,
training, animal production,
disaster mitigation, food safety)

Crop Production
(bananas, taro, yams, coconuts,
kava, needs assessment, farming
systems research for the
lowlands and atolls, vegetable
seeds and planting materials)

Plant
protection services (global
harmonisation of Quarantine the
Pacific Way, response to risks
of Genetically Modified
Organisms, coordination of
emergency response to pests,
promoting adoption of
sustainable pest management
practices, taro beetle research
field trials,
Pacific
fruit fly)

Development of
Sustainable Agriculture in the
Pacific (DSAP Project) aims
to make agriculture productive,
environmentally sensitive and
capable of strengthening the
social fabric of local
communities in the 10
participating countries covering
Melanesia, Polynesia and
Micronesia.

The Forestry & Trees projects provide training, technical support and personnel,
equipment, production and
dissemination of information and
other awareness material and advice
to Pacific Island countries and
territories.
