Forging
lines of communication between people
 The
Canberra Agreement (1947) stipulates that "the official
languages of the Commission and its auxiliary agencies shall
include French and English". This bilingualism is an asset
for the SPC : with just two languages all the inhabitants of the
Pacific islands can communicate within the organisation.
The
Translation and Interpretation Section is the pillar of
bilingualism at SPC, with its international team of proven
professionals. The high level of quality and efficiency which
characterise the language services provided help promote the
corporate image which SPC presents to its members, the
organisations which it works with and the general public.

Interpretation:
The Spoken Word
 SPC
can provide a full meeting service in English and French
to its members anywhere in the region.
Anywhere
in the islands

The
SPC's experienced staff can set up a meeting in almost
any Pacific island location. They can provide both
consecutive and simultaneous interpretation thanks to
portable equipment which allows Pacific island
countries and territories to benefits from services
designed for large conferences.

In
Noumea : At Headquarters, a fine meeting
facility, the Jacques Iekawé Conference Centre, can
cater for up to 180 people in the main hall and 25 in
a smaller room, both equipped for simultaneous
interpretation. Three smaller committee rooms and
refreshment and secretariat areas are also available.

Translation :
The written word
 Translation
of more than 5,000 pages every year in a wide range of
specialised areas such as fisheries, agriculture, health,
statistics, demography, women’s and youth development,
culture, forestry, energy, etc., while trying to reconcile
two often conflicting requirements, i.e. quality and
speed. The reports of meetings and a host of other SPC
publications in English and French provide a wealth of
information on a very wide range of subjects, and are a
significant contribution to the heritage of the South
Pacific.
A
reviser oversees the work's quality and cohesion and takes
part in decisions regarding terminology. A workload
management system makes it possible to adjust the
Section's activities depending on the volume of documents,
the availability of team member, the
interpreter-translators' duty travel schedule and the
required deadlines.

processing and voice recognition software speed up
translation time.

The
section's library contains hundreds of documents, in
particular single or multi-language dictionaries,
encyclopaedias, CD-ROMs, and periodicals.

translators communicate by e-mail with specialists at
the SPC and in other international organisations as
well as wih their counterparts around the world.
