Landcare in Fiji:

Strengthening Partnerships for the
Sustainable Management of Land Resources

27 -28 July, 2005, Mocambo Hotel, Nadi

SPC/GTZ - Friday, 22, July 2005, Suva, Fiji Islands - A ‘Landcare for Fiji’ workshop will be held from 27-28 July, 2005, at the Mocambo Hotel, Nadi, Fiji Islands.

The theme of the workshop is ‘Strengthening partnerships for the sustainable management of land resources’. Representatives from community and landowner groups, non-government organisations, donor organisations and relevant government agencies will take part.

Participants will work together to define a framework that will enable government agencies and others involved in natural resource management projects to coordinate their efforts and to collaborate on land management issues. The workshop will also attempt to identify mechanisms needed to facilitate the bottom-up input necessary in interactive resource management. A group-based concept in which resource owners/land users are organised into local resource management groups will be introduced and its local applicability explored.

Inoke Ratukalou, Director of Fiji’s Department of Land Resources, Planning, and Development (DLRD), says, “The government needs delivery mechanisms that efficiently mobilise both internal and external resources for the local communities involved. These mechanisms will not only contribute towards Fiji’s overall national strategy for strengthening local capacity, but will also be important in addressing the growing requirement of donor organisations for tangible community impacts”.

Christoph Muziol, Team Leader of the SPC/GTZ Pacific-German Regional Forestry Project, describes the workshop as timely and says, “Its outcomes will provide a basis for implementing the recently endorsed National Rural Land Use Policy and the revised National Forest Policy”. The formulation of the Fiji National Rural Land Use Policy and review of the National Forest Policy were supported by the SPC and GTZ (Secretariat of the Pacific Community and German Technical Cooperation). Mr Muziol added that the workshop will provide an opportunity for the SPC LRD to coordinate its resource management programmes with government and non-government agencies.

The workshop will begin at 8.30 am, Wednesday 27 July, in the Mocambo II conference room and will be officially opened by the Minister of Agriculture, Sugar and Land Resettlement, the Hon. Minister Ilaitia Tuisese. It is being jointly organised by the DLRD and the SPC/GTZ Pacific-German Regional Forestry Project. The latter organisations are also providing financial support.

The objectives of the workshop are:

1. To define a framework for partnerships between supportive government agencies and community-based resource management projects for the promotion of sustainable land use in Fiji

2. To identify an effective model for organising community Landcare groups

3. To be informed on existing polices and Acts supporting sustainable land use
