5th Heads of Fisheries Meeting

The 5th SPC Heads of Fisheries
meeting (HoF5) will be held from 3-7th April 2006, at SPC Headquarters, Noumea,
New Caledonia. It is a meeting of member country fisheries specialists that
guides the work of both of SPC's Fisheries Programmes: Oceanic and
Coastal.
HoF5 will also be preceded by an
SPC/FFA workshop to help implement a recent directive by Pacific Island
leaders to develop a legal framework to manage bottom trawling to
protect biodiversity in the high seas of the region, for consideration
by the Forum in 2006.

2005 Pocket Statistical Summary

The
Statistics and Demography programme has just released the new edition of the
statistical summary.
The booklet
provides a wide range of statistical information on the 22 island countries
and territories including general and population characteristics,
government expenditures, consumer price index and overseas trade.

Palau prepares for avian influenza
Palau’s Avian Flu Response Team learnt how to take blood samples from chickens to test for avian influenza in a recent training session.
LRD staff members, Dr Steve Angus, Veterinary Epidemiologist, and Konrad Englberger, Coordinator, Plant Protection Micronesia, conducted the training, which was aimed at strengthening the capacity of the 17-member Response Team to deal with an outbreak.
“Palau is so far free of avian influenza and this training is a contingency measure in case of an outbreak,” said Dr Angus.
