Regional: Energy for Sustainable Development in Caribbean Buildings
This regional project covers: Antigua & Barbuda, Belize, Grenada, St. Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago. The project will build capacity to reduce GHG emissions in the commercial and residential buildings including appliances, demonstrate technologies to achieve reductions of 20% of GHG emissions and put in place policies or programs to roll out these technologies to the marketplace.
The project consists of six components:
1. Establish an Assessment and Monitoring System for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Buildings
2. Enhanced national capacity for energy efficiency and renewable energy development
3. Appropriate financial and market based mechanisms that support energy efficiency (including an investment element)
4. Demonstration program for sustainable energy (including an investment element)
5. Regulatory framework to promote energy efficient buildings, equipment and appliances
6. Regional public awareness, knowledge management & sharing, replication strategy and regional reporting
The program will create strong coordination across the region, involving all countries in sharing of best practices. Significant efforts will be undertaken to encourage standards and labeling adoption across the region. Investment components of the project total $1.4 million or 28% of the total GEF amount.
Direct emissions reductions are estimated to be 2.4 million tCO2e over the project lifetime. Indirect emissions reductions are estimated to exceed 8 million tCO2e.
