IAEA to Open Center on Ocean Acidification

16 June 2012: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced the summer launch of its new Ocean Acidification International Coordination Centre at IAEA’s Monaco Environmental Laboratories, aiming to facilitate action and communication on ocean acidification.

Spurred by evidence that most areas of Earth’s oceans will be inhospitable to coral reefs by 2050, which would radically alter fish stocks and ocean life more generally, the Centre aims to serve scientists, policymakers, universities, the media and the public in coordinating and communicating efforts to study effects and possible responses to ocean acidification. The Centre will be supported by numerous IAEA Member States via its “Peaceful Uses Initiative,” and will focus on areas of activity not currently funded via national or international programmes.
