Ambassador Lima on Rio+20 Themes

In my view, the Green Economy debate must be linked to sustainable development resulting from both a realistic reflection of the current situation and a desirable vision for the future. It should have an attainable goal based on a mutual agreement and should address the need to continue reducing the gap between developed and developing countries while promoting peace, progress and justice for all.
One aspect of Rio +20 that should merit the greatest attention of the international community as a condition for sustainable development and growth is the eradication of poverty. Eradicating poverty is a fundamental requirement of our time. If we do not tackle the roots of this evil, we cannot establish the necessary peace and security for the world’s future. When populations, communities or people in certain parts of the world do not see how to build their future in a sustainable manner, they fall prey to those who want to take advantage of a situation filled with uncertainty and distress which could lead to creating chaos.
If we want peace, progress and security, we need the international community to address and eradicate the long-term roots of poverty The young people should be able to dream of a future in their homeland in the context of their own family, history and in harmony with the environment. I personally have a grandson and I want him to live in a sustainable world.
Oceans are our living environment that we need to preserve, protect and defend from pollution, acidification and excessive exploitation. As far as SIDS are concerned, I would say that the life of the Islanders depends on Oceans as their natural surroundings, just as others depend on the mountains or steppe. Needless to say, Climate change is directly impacting on the very survival of some communities in the Pacific and elsewhere, due to sea level rise and acidification, as well as from greenhouse gas emissions produced in other parts of the world. Climate refugees are no longer a future probability, but are becoming a tangible reality. The issue of Oceans or Blue Economy then should be approached with an acute awareness of the issues it covers- not only for islands but also for the world at large which depends on oceans’ resources. I am deeply convinced that what affect SIDS will affect the entire world in this regard.
I contend that we need global solidarity towards our common future. The whole human community could be at stake unless we are able to reach important and desirable solutions for these issues at Rio +20. We must stay optimistic and work towards the fulfillment of the Rio +20 objectives.
