When the operating system, Windows 98 is installed, you may or may not have installed the Dial-Up networking component. To verify this please follow the steps below.
Select Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs / Windows Setup / Communications
If the Dial-Up Networking box has a tick in it, you have already got Dial-Up Networking. If the box is empty, click on it so that a tick appears. Now press Apply and then OK. You will be prompted for your installation disks/CD. If you have a Windows 98 CD please insert into your CD-ROM and then direct the prompt to your CD-ROM drive. If you have the windows installation files copied onto your system please direct the prompt to the correct directory. Select OK. Dial-Up Networking will be installed.
Modem Installation
To install your modem, select Start / Settings / Control Panel / Modems / Add and follow the prompts.
Dialup Adapter
Select Start / Settings / Control Panel / Network
Click Add, highlight Adapter and click Add.
Choose Microsoft Dial-Up Adapter.
Click OK.
Click OK to finish. You should restart your computer if asked to do so.
Select Start / Programs / Accessories / Communications / Dial-Up Networking
Click Next.
Enter the name USP.
Select your modem (if you have more than one).
Click Next.
Enter the telephone number 3313657 for staff members Enter the telephone 3311088 for students.
Click Next, and then Finish.
Right-click USP.
Select Properties.
Select the Server Types tab.
Fill out the dialogue box as shown below.
Click TCP/IP Settings.
Complete the boxes as below.
Click OK.
Connecting
Select Start / Programs / Accessories / Communications / Dial-Up Networking
You will hear your modem dial and negotiate. If the computer is able to connect to the University, the username and password is verified.
A succesful connection sees the minimizing of the dialup screen to the bottom right of the taskbar.
Disconnecting
To end your connection, double click on your minimized dialup connection on the bottom right of your taskbar, press Disconnect in the Connected to USP box
