Installing Dial-up on Win95
When the operating system, Windows 95 is installed you may or may not have installed the Dial-Up networking component. To verify this, please follow the steps below.
Select Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs / Windows Setup / Communications
If the Dial-Up Networking box has a tick in it, you have already got Dial-Up Networking. If the box is empty, click on it so that a tick appears. Now press Apply and then OK. You will be prompted for your installation disks/CD. If you have a Windows 95 CD please insert into your CD-ROM and then direct the prompt to your CD-ROM drive. If you have the windows installation files copied onto your system please direct the prompt to the correct directory. Select OK. Dial-Up Networking will be installed.
Modem Installation
To install your modem, select Start / Settings / Control Panel / Modems / Add and follow the prompts.
Dialup Adapter
Select Start / Settings / Control Panel / Network
Click Add, highlight Adapter and click Add.
Choose Microsoft Dial-Up Adapter.
Windows 95 adds Client for Microsoft Networks, Client for NetWare Networks, IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol and NetBEUI by default. Highlight each of these and click Remove so that you are left with just Dial-Up Adapter.
Click Add, select Protocol and click Add.
Select Microsoft TCP/IP, and press OK.
Highlight TCP/IP and select Properties.
The properties box has 6 tabs which need to be completed.
IP Address
Choose Obtain an IP address automatically. WINS Configuration
Choose Disable WINS Resolution.
Gateway
Bindings, Advanced
Leave these settings as they are.
DNS Configuration
Click OK to finish. You will be asked to restart your computer.
Select Start / Programs / Accessories / Dial-Up Networking
Double click Make New Connection.
Enter the name USP.
Select your modem (if you have more than one).
Click Next.
For the telephone number, enter 3313657 for staff members and 3311088 for students.
Connecting
Select Start / Programs / Accessories / Dial-Up Networking
Double-click USP
Enter your username and password in the boxes.
Press Connect.
You will hear your modem dial and negotiate. If the computer is able to connect to the University, the username and password is verified.
A succesful connection sees the minimizing of the dialup screen to the bottom right of the taskbar.
Disconnecting
To end your connection, double click on your minimized dialup connection on the bottom right of your taskbar, press Disconnect in the Connected to USP box.
