Security Tips

  • When sharing files over the network always use passwords and special access permissions to prevent unauthorized access.
    1.  For Windows 95/98 users when sharing folders there is an option to set a password for full access or read only access. Read access is more restrictive, where it allows users to only read the files and not make changes to it. Whereas Full access, grants more privileges such as write, change and read access.

    2.  For Windows 2000/XP you could restrict access to the shared folders by specifying Laucala user accounts and grant proper NTFS and share permission access to these accounts only. Hence, only these accounts will be able to access the contents of the folders.

  • It is good practice to protect your PC from unauthorized use when left unattended.
    1.  For Windows 2000/XP users it is possible to lock you PC. You can do that simply by pressing the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys simultaneously and select the Lock Computer option. To unlock the PC you will need to enter the account password that you used to logon to the PC.

    2.  For Windows 95/98 desktop it is possible to set a screensaver password. The screensaver option is available by right-clicking anywhere on the desktop and then select Properties. On the Display properties window select ScreenSaver, set the time after which it should turn on.  Select On resume, password protect option. Click OK to activate this settings.

  • You should not give your domain/email passwords to anyone. If you suspect that someone knows you domain/email password we advice that you immediately change your password. This is done either by logging on to the staff Webmail facility and clicking on the Password option.  If you are a Win2000/XP user, you can change your password by simply pressing the keys Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click the Change Password option.
