University Policies for the Dial-UP Services

 

Dial-Up Network Access

This provides users with the full range of services. The computer is assigned with a temporary IP address and becomes a node on the Network. Applications such as FTP (file transfer), Netscape (Web browser) and Pegasus (mail client) can be run over a PPP (point-to-point) link.

The dial-up network service will be available to all STUDENTS and staff of USP, subject to the terms and conditions of this policy. Internet access is only available for full time staff of the LAUCALA campus only, and due to the limited capacity of our devices, ITS is restricting the number of users accessing this service until a permanent arrangement will be implemented. The following policies are to safeguard the processes that ITS carry out in maintaining the effectiveness of this service.

 

  1. Approval of Internet access (For USP staff only).

    1. All applicants must be full time-permanent staff of USP or an USP visitor with valid identifications.
    2. A letter or a memo must be endorsed by the Head of Departments addressed to the Director, ITS, stating the staff’s reasons for requesting access to the USP dial-up Internet service.
    3. The Director on behalf of the CITC has the authority to approve/disapprove any application

  2. ITS responsibilities (for approved applications).

    1. ITS will provide a dial-up access for the staff member within 3 working days of receiving the application without charges.
    2. ITS will notify the staff within 24hours once 2.1 is completed.
    3. For USP PCs, ITS will make the arrangement for the installation, configuration and will also maintaining of the connections.
    4. For personally owned PCs, ITS will not be responsible for the installation, configuration and the maintaining of the connections. ITS will however, provide step-by-step instructions and the required programs.
    5. ITS is responsible for the maintenance and upgrading of the host computers and the devices involved to allow full 24 hours access for USP staff and students.
    6. ITS reserve the right to disconnect a connection which is idle for over 10 minutes without any activities.
    7. ITS reserve the right to disconnect a session which may have been connected for at least 30 minutes.
    8. ITS is not liable for any phone charges.
    9. The Director of ITS reserve the right to terminate or suspend any user’s access to this service at his/her sole discretion at any time without liability and without prior notice.
    10. ITS will terminate an access when a staff’s contract with USP is terminated.

  3. User responsibility.

    1. It is the responsibility of the user to make sure that the use of this service is subject to the University’s policy and regulations for Internet access and for Governing the use of Computer Facilities.
    2. The updates on the policies and regulations for the University’s Internet services are available on the USP’s website. It is therefore, the responsibility of the user to check these updates regularly.
    3. The user must NOT use this service to gain unauthorized access to any information, network or systems to compromise the security or integrity of any network
    4. The user is responsible for his/her equipment and software necessary for this service as well as the security of his/her data.
    5. It is the responsibility of the user to use this service at their own risk. ITS will NOT be responsible nor liable for any loss or damage of data caused by this service.
    6. Only the user is permitted to login using the user’s account and only once at any one time.
    7. It is the responsibility of the user to disconnect the service when it is idle for more than 10 minutes without any activities.
