- How do I connect to a shared printer
Depending on the Operating System you have on your office PC, the instructions for connecting to shared printers varies. Note: You must have either logged on with your username and password onto the Laucala Domain.
For Windows 95 and 98 PCs:
- Click on Start button, select Run.
- Enter the path of the shared network printer. (This is usually the pc number of the pc sharing the printer and the shared printer name.)
- Click on OK.

- Next a dialogue box should appear as below asking you if you want to install the network printer. Click on Yes.

- Click Next

- Select the software driver for the shared printer.

Note: If the Model of the printer is not in the list, check click on Have Disk and insert the printer disk in the drive to use the Manufacturer's software. Otherwise, you can use the default drivers eg HP deskjet plus for HP deskjet model or HP laserjet plus for HP laserjet models.
- Next enter a name for the shared printer.

- Next the wizard would ask you if you would like to print a test page. If it prints the test page then you have successfully installed your shared printer. You should now see an icon for the installed printer in the printer settings folder.

For Windows 2000 and XP machines:
The Procedure is straight forward as Windows 2000 and XP machines which usually install the drivers automatically
- Click on Start button and select Run.
- Enter the path for the shared network printer.
- Click OK.

- Windows attempts to connect to the shared printer and then attempts to load the correct software driver.

- Once this is successful, a window will appear as the one below onto your desktop

This shows you have sucessfully installed the shared network printer.

- How to re-install my local printer?
Windows 95/98
- Select Start button, go to Settings
- Click Printers
- Select Add Printer

- Click Next

- Select Local Printer

- Select from the list the corresponding brand and model number.
(note: for most HP Laserjets and HP Deskjet you could select the default driver for Laserjet (HP Laserjet plus) for Deskjet (HP Deskjet plus)

- Select the Lpt1 Printer Port
- Click Next

- Provide a name for the printer, Choose yes if you want to set this printer as the default printer.
- Click Next
This should successfully set up you connected printer and should now be ready for printing

Windows 2000/XP
- Click on Start
- Select Printers and Faxes

- Click Add a printer from the side menu

- This should start up the Add Printer Wizard.

- Select Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer. This should successfully install your local printer.
However if you get a screen similar to the one below, you will need to install the printer manually.

- Click Next and select the port your printer is connected to. Usually LPT1 or USB

- Select the correct driver from the list.

- Click Next. Enter an appropriate name for the printer and select whether you want is as default.

Next the wizard will ask if you want to share the printer and whether you want to print a test page.
Once you reached the screen below it indicates that you have successfully installed your printer.

Cannot print to my connected printer?
First check the power connection to the printer and that the printer is turned on. Usually for DeskJet or LaserJet models there are power indicator lights on the front panel.
Next check the printer cable connection from the printer to your pc if firmly connected. This usually is either a parallel cable or an USB cable.
If all is ok go to your PC and check to see that the correct printer has been selected as the default.

How do I find my default printer?
Click on Start > Settings > Printers... (Printers and Faxes for WinXP)
Your default printer is the one that has a check mark top-left of the printer icon. Note the difference in icons from a network printer and a locally connect printer

Next double click on the default printer icon to check the status of the print job.

Why Do I Get User Intervention Error?
Below is a screenshot when you open up the status window of your printer.

To resolve the "user intervention error" message, right click on the default printer icon and un-tick "use printer offine".
If this does not solve the printing problem, reinstall your printer
