Internet Browser FAQ

  1. I can access the USP website but cannot access the Internet.
The proxy settings for Internet Explorer (IE) or Netscape have not been set up properly. All websites that are non-USP sites must go through a proxy server to enable them to access external websites.

  3. I tried to access a certain website but it is blocked. What do I do?
ITS implemented an Internet Filter which restricts certain sites from being accessed, this was decided during the CITC meeting held in November 2002

The website you want can be unblocked by clicking on the little push button "Please Give Me Access". Once this is selected, it will request you to type in your e-mail username and password and a brief description of the reason as to why you would like access to the site. After the form is completed and submitted, the site that you have requested will be unblocked once it has been processed. Providing you have filled in the form correctly, the site will be made available during the next scheduled update of the filter. Normally this should be within the next 2 hours.

  5. I am a student and could not access a particular website since it is blocked. What do I do?
Students cannot submit request to unblock, instead you will be required to send a request to the student Helpdesk via email helpdesk(at)student.usp.ac.fj

  7. I get an “access denied” error message when accessing websites apart from the USP website?

There are 2 reasons this may occur:
    1. You PC is only allowed to access the local intranet
    2. Due to the increase number of new viruses, spywares etc, IT Services has started to monitor web request received from client PC’s. This is due to the fact that some of these viruses and spywares generate large volume of unnecessary requests to our web servers. In this circumstance a report of all PCs that have been blocked from accessing the Internet is usually generated by our Systems Administrators and is passed onto our Helpdesk Operators for further action.  Once it is logged, the Support staff cleans the PC of spywares, viruses and then Internet access is restored on your PC.

  8. I cannot download any of the audio or video files.  Why is that?
In an attempt to minimize the inappropriate use of the University's Internet bandwidth or Internet pipe, ITS has taken necessary action by blocking all download of audio and video files that meets the criteria described below.

Due to the recent abuse of such privileges, where large audio files were downloaded during working hours, ITS has prohibited the download of files that are mostly used for commercial, personal, recreational, and  entertainment purposes.  In doing so the following file types with these file extensions will be blocked at our Internet gateway:
AFX, ASF, ASX, AU, AVI, DIVX, M3U, MOV, MP2, MP3, MPEG, MPG, QT, RA, RAM, RM, VIV, VIVO, VOB, VQF, WAV, WMA, WMV, VBS, SHS, PIF
If these activities are left unchecked, it can slow the online access.
