User's Guide for Lecture Theatre AV Control Systems

The University of the South Pacific offers several multi-media lecture theatres for your teaching and presentation purposes. They include

Each site contains similar equipment, but each theatre is differently configured.

The Projection Services Unit of the University Media Centre maintains the AV equipment in the theatres. A technician is usually present in each theatre for the first few weeks of the semester to help lecturers gain familiarity with the equipment. Assistance is available during all lecture hours. Please call Extension 2266 or 2127.

General set-up

The AV lectern located at the front of each theatre (except Marine Studies) is simple to operate. It offers a wide range of operations, such as:

  • Computer-based presentations (for example, the Microsoft OfficeŽ software); some theatres offer Internet connections.
  • Video information (via VHS tapes, other video players, or the use of video cameras);
  • Audio material (via CD player or audio-cassette player); and
  • A document camera, ideal for displaying paper documents, photographs, 35mm slides, and overhead transparencies.

All theatres offer lapels microphones; most feature a lectern-mounted microphone and the capability to add additional microphones as needed.

Located in the projection area at the rear of each theatre is an electronic presentation (or LCD) projector.

Lecturers can attach their own Windows-based or Macintosh laptop computers to the system. Please call in advance for assistance.

Rooms 092-001 and 092-003

These two theatres feature USP's best presentation equipment. Both theatres feature a computer, VCR, document camera, audio-cassette deck, music CD player, and a lectern microphone. Room 001 has Internet connection.

Equipment operations are controlled via a touch-screen panel mounted on the lectern. Push the appropriate buttons to select options.

To activate the AV system, touch the "FINETOUCH" button.

To use the network PC, choose the option "PC". There are two other PC inputs located on the left side of the console, labelled PC1 and PC2, intended for use with laptop computers. Touching the "PC" buttons will cause the projector to turn on and the screen to lower.

To use VHS-format videotape, touch the "VHS" button. The projector will automatically turn on and the screen will lower. Place the VHS tape into the VHS player. You may pause, fast forward, rewind, and stop the tape by selecting the appropriate screen buttons.

To select the document camera, touch the "DOC CAMERA" screen soft button. This will switch the video projector source to a higher resolution. Zoom controls are on the front of the document projector. Focusing is performed automatically, but you may manually adjust the focus by using the appropriate focus buttons. The "LIGHTING" buttons control the backlight or overhead light. Transparencies are backlit from the base; 35mm slides may be placed below the lens in the camera head.

To play an audio CD, place the disk in the player and touch the screen soft button labelled "CD". The control buttons will then be displayed.

To play an audio-cassette, place the tape in the tape deck provided. Controls are available for playback, rewind and fast forward. You may also record your lecture using this equipment.

The "room control" button allows you to adjust the pre-set levels for the wireless microphone, turn off the lectern-mounted microphone, select the "AUTOSET" for microphone levels, and manually raise and lower the screen. The "session end" display provides a choice of options, such as allowing you to turn off the projector or close down the system.

For best results, the front two banks of fluorescent lights (nearest the lectern) should be switched off. The switches for these lights are located in the box by the main entry doors. Also, consider closing the wooden louvres to reduce the amount of ambient light entering the room, which can dim the projected LCD image. Controls for the room fans are located near the main entry door.

U-8 and N111

These are some of USP's oldest AV lecture theatres. Featured equipment includes: a computer, VCR, document camera, a multi-scan (not LCD) projector, and audio-cassette playback deck, and a lectern microphone.

Equipment operations are controlled via a panel mounted on the lectern. Push the appropriate buttons to select options

S024 and H104

These are USP's newest lecture theatres. H104 is expected to operational in 1st Semester, 2000.

Both feature a networked (Internet) computer, VCR, document camera, overhead projector, a console microphone, and provisions for the addition of portable microphones. Music CDs can be played via the CD drive in the computer; there are no additional audio-playback facilities.

Equipment operations are controlled via a remote control stick mounted on the lectern. Push the appropriate buttons to select options

Marine Studies

This facility in Lower Campus features: a computer, VCR, document camera, overhead projector, a 35mm slide carousel projector, a multi-scan (not LCD) projector, a console microphone, and provisions for the addition of audio playback equipment and portable microphones. It does not feature a console, as such. Equipment operations are controlled via a panel mounted inside the wall cabinet.

For best results, consider closing the wooden louvres to reduce the amount of ambient light entering the room, which can dim the projected LCD image. Controls for the room fans are located near the main entry door.

Use of a microphone is highly recommended due to the theatre's poor acoustical design.
