United Nations Development Programme

SIDS-related mandate/activities:

Through the implementation of the ‘Capacity 2015’ framework, UNDP is helping SIDS respond to capacity limitations in addressing vulnerability and sustainable development constraints by planning and implementing initiatives at local, national and regional levels within and across SIDS. The goal of the Capacity 2015 SIDS initiative is to contribute to the sustainable development of SIDS by enabling them to implement the BPOA, to achieve the MDGs, and to reduce their vulnerabilities by minimizing the risks from external shocks whilst maximizing environmental, economic, and social resilience. The program addresses vulnerability reduction and resilience building in five critical areas: (a) natural Resource Management (focused on water, land, marine and coastal resources); (b) energy; (c) health; (d) agriculture/food security; and (e) natural disasters. In addition, the program also has three cross-cutting components: human resources development; support for local level capacity building; and institutional strengthening.
