Port Antonio is
a lush, environmental paradise in the Conservation Corridor Area of
Jamaica. The area has formed The Port Antonio Destination Marketing
Program (PADMP) in cooperation with Valley Hikes, an award winning ecotourism
organization, as well as a number of various other organizations, to
ensure that conservation is at a high level of importance in this area.
The organization works with various members of the business environment
and community to develop tours, conservation programs, and education
programs.
Valley Hikes seeks to promote sustainable development of eco-tourism,
feeling that it enriches not only the quality of life for the residents,
but also the overall experience of the traveler. Valley Hikes serves
the communities in the area, seeking to enhance economic viability while
preserving cultural and natural resources.
The hikes take place in an area wedged between the John Crow Mountains
and the Blue Mountains; an area called the Rio Grande Valley. Hikes
are plentiful in this area, and there are numerous attractions that
only the locals are aware of. This is where the local people come in.
All the guides are locals, from the Rio Grande Valley. They guide travelers
through these lush tropical forests. They will tell you all about specific
plants and there uses, local history, and the names and habits of the
birds.
These tours are planned to go beyond the usual boundaries of traveling,
in order to educate individuals on the importance of environmental and
cultural preservation.
