The small size of the populations of many SIDS, and their dispersal across numerous, often remote, islands means that interaction at the community level is particularly important. The implementation of sustainable development projects, such as building resilience to natural disasters, adapting to climate change, reducing dependency on imported fuels, and increasing food production, often happens at the community level through small scale projects.

SIDSnet communities provide a space for virtual communities to be created around any relevant set of issues, commonalities or interests. Each community has its own space for discussion, file sharing, and for posting articles and events.

Existing local communities may also wish to use this site to extend their network and reach or simply to inform those both inside and outside of a community about ongoing work by different communities in a particular area.
