20 November 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has reported that India ratified the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the CBD in October 2012, during the 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the CBD. Fiji and Ethiopia also acceded to the Protocol, on 24 October and 16 November 2012, respectively.

The theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2013 will be "Water and Biodiversity;" the theme was chosen to coincide with the UN designation of 2013 as the International Year of Water Cooperation. The twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity is expected to be held in the second half of 2014.
