18 February 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has reported that, in response to the Hyderabad Call for Biodiversity Champions in support of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, the Government of the Maldives has pledged that the entire country and its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) will become a UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Biosphere Reserve by 2017.

The seventh meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Conference of the Parties serving as Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is tentatively scheduled to be held from 6-10 October 2014. 21 December 2012: Panama and Mauritius have become the 10th and 11th countries respectively to ratify the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization (ABS) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
