The 2012 Third World Summit on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), saw 36 representatives and heads of state from Small Island Developing States (SIDS) take to the floor during the Plenary Session to deliver statements on a range of issues of importance and relevance to them. 21 November 2012: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has announced the appointment of Wu Hongbo, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, as Secretary-General for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The Conference, which will seek renewed political commitment to address the special needs of SIDS, is scheduled to take place in Apia, Samoa, in 2014.

14 August 2012: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Gyan Chandra Acharya as Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) (OHRLLS). Acharya succeeds Cheick Sidi Diarra, who served as the High Representative since 2007.
