The objective of this UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Orgnization (UNESCO) organized workshop is to strengthen and promote regional cooperation towards the Regular Process of the World Ocean Assessment, and build capacity of member countries in the development of integrated marine assessments. 6 July 2012: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has reported that the World Heritage Centre (WHC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the French Marine Protected Area (MPA) Agency (AAMP), in support of the conservation of marine World Heritage sites.

The UN International Year of Water Cooperation will be observed in 2013. The campaign will work to advance comprehension of the challenges and benefits of water cooperation, and promote it worldwide. UN-Water has called upon the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to lead the International Year.
