27 August 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) held a two-day agro-forestry training for 30 Tonga and ni-Vanuatu agroforestry students in Eua, Tonga, from 23-24 August 2012. The training promoted agroforestry as part of the traditional farming system, where land resources are limited, in order to enhance their productivity and address issues of food security and poverty alleviation among communities.

30 August 2012: The 43rd Pacific Islands Forum convened in Rarotonga, the Cook Islands, from 28-30 August 2012, under the theme of “Large Oceans Island States – the Pacific Challenge.” Issues discussed at the meeting included the outcomes of the recent UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), the Oceanscape initiative, climate change, and radioactive contaminants in the Marshall Islands. 22 August 2012: The Government of Vanuatu has officially announced its decision to join the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), by endorsing the IUCN Statutes, with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources designated as its liaison with the IUCN Secretariat.

August 2012: Ministers of Pacific Island Countries have agreed on a regional cultural strategy, titled “Regional Cultural Strategy: Investing in Pacific Cultures 2010-2020.” The Cultural Strategy provides policy guidance for the Pacific, to assist in developing the cultural sector and promoting of Pacific cultures.
