18 February 2013: The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has reported that, in response to the Hyderabad Call for Biodiversity Champions in support of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, the Government of the Maldives has pledged that the entire country and its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) will become a UN Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Biosphere Reserve by 2017.

This Special Session of the Southwest Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission (SWIOFC) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) will take place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. 8 January 2013: The Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) of the World Bank has published a press release on a project to improve the institutional framework for energy in the Maldives to help meet the country’s climate change mitigation goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2020.

20 December 2012: The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) announced that Maldives has become the 177th Party to CITES.
Maldives are home to over 300 CITES species, including the whale shark, dugong, giant humphead wrasse, black seahorse, hawksbill turtle, Eurasian spoonbill, duck hawk and Indian flying-fox. CITES trade with Maldives consists mainly of raw corals.
