COOK ISLANDS TOURISM REACHES SATURATION
MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Nov. 13) - There's been a slowdown in
Cook Islands' tourist numbers and an accompanying decline in the economic
growth of the hotel and motel industry.
A report presented to cabinet says there are indications that tourism has
reached saturation point and that the focus should be on other areas to
support sustainable economic growth.
It says analysis continues to show the Cook Islands' dependence on tourism
and future efforts to boost economic growth should focus on promoting
diversification.
The report says that while the growth of tourism has slowed, there has been
continued growth in the trade and retail sector.
It says this indicates that the economy does not wholly depend on tourism for
growth.
