TONGA REPORTS 14 PERCENT SURGE IN TOURISM

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Sept. 24) - Tonga's tourism minister,
Dr Masaso Paunga, says tourism in the kingdom last year was a great success,
compared to previous years.

Dr Paunga says tourism earned Tonga about $US8 million in foreign revenue
last year, an increase of 14 per cent on 2001.

He says about 50,000 tourists visited Tonga, despite the threat that
international terrorism has posed to tourism industries in recent years.

The minister says the tourism industry is expected to generate more revenue
this year.
