PALAU WELCOMES FIRST AMBASSADOR FROM ITALY
KOROR, Palau (Palau Horizon, July 22) — Italy’s Ambassador to Palau Umberto
Colesanti has presented his credentials to President Tommy Remengesau.
Colesanti, who is based in the Philippines, is the first Italian ambassador
to Palau.
The presentation of his credentials signifies a growth in friendly relations
between the two countries, Palau officials said.
"Palau hopes that it can rely on Italy’s G-8 membership to bring focus to the
country in terms of investment and as tourist destination for Italians and
Europeans," Remengesau said.
In return, he said, the government of Italy can count on Palau’s support in
the United Nations.
The president added that both governments would initiate cooperation in the
area of renewable energy.
Earlier, the European Union granted financial assistance to light up the
Compact Road using solar-powered lights.
Colesanti said the Italian government would support Palau’s program on
renewable energy.
Remengesau said the friendly relation between the two countries began in 1995
through the "remarkable services" of Italy’s honorary consul to Palau,
Marcelo Pierantozzi.
