PIRACY SURGES ON HIGH SEAS, INDONESIA WORST

MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, July 24) - Piracy on the international 
high seas has surged 37-percent to an all-time high of 234 attacks from 
January to June this year, with 16 sailors killed.

The Kuala Lumpur-based International Maritime Bureau said in 165 instances, 
ships were boarded and nine ships were hijacked.

The bureau said the number of deaths of seafarers around the world was 
sharply up, with 16 killed and 52 injured.

It said Indonesian waters were the most dangerous, accounting for over one 
quarter of the world total.

Bangladesh was second worst, followed by Nigeria and India.
