PNG PRIME MINISTER MORAUTA’S VILLAGE IN GULF HIT BY SUDDEN RISE
    IN SEA LEVEL

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (August 22, 2000 - The
National/PINA Nius Online)---Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir
Mekere Morauta's Kukipi home village in Gulf province has been
hit by an unusual sea level rise and the people there urgently
    need food and drinking water.

The National Disaster and Emergency Services said it is preparing
to rush a supply of fresh water to the people in the area.

Acting Director General Martin Mose said that the unusual rise in
sea level was affecting the people at Kukipi and other villages
along the coast besides Daru in Western province.

Mr. Mose said that Sir Mekere's home village had been the hardest
    hit by the rising sea.

He said the villages in the area were located on low land and in
between waterways so any unusual rise in water level can threaten
the villages and their food gardens.

Mr. Mose said his office was preparing containers now to
    transport the emergency water supply.

However, he said a lack of funding may hamper emergency
operations. He has appealed to the Prime Minister and regional
MPs, including Chris Haiveta, Gulf regional, and Kerema MP Sir
Tom Korea, to assist in the special relief operation for their
    people.

It was reported last week that the unusual rise in sea level
already had washed away some villages and food gardens.

Relief food supplies are reported to have been flown to the
people affected in both Gulf and Western provinces.

According to reports, bags of rice and tin food were airlifted to
    the villagers along the coast.
