International Conference on Climate and Health in Small Island
States, July 24-25, 2000
Nadi, Fiji
Inter-agency Network on Climate and Human Health: World Health
Organization United Nations Environment Programme and World
Meteorological Organization
According to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (IPCC), small island states are likely the most
vulnerable countries in the world to projected climate change.
Many direct physical and ecological threats exist for these
nations that pose risks to human health and welfare. The World
Health Organization (WHO), together with the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological
Organization (WMO), are organizing this important conference to
help inform stakeholders in Small Island States, particularly in
the Pacific region, about the potential health vulnerabilities,
as well as measures that can be adopted to reduce the risks from
present climate variability (e.g. El Niño), and also about the
risk from potential sea level rise and climate change. The
conference is open and free of charge.
The conference will be followed by a Regional Workshop on Climate
Variability and Change and their Health Effects in Pacific Island
States, 26-28 July 2000. The workshop is for selected Regional
participants by invitation from WHO and WMO.
Conference Agenda
The two-day conference will consist of formal case presentations
of research on health or related impacts of climate variability
and change. There will be unlimited (open) attendance. Speakers
would be both invited and selected from a solicitation for
abstracts (300 words) and 3-4 page papers. Qualifying abstracts
beyond speaking slots will go towards a poster session. The first
morning will include a keynote address by Dr Jonathan Patz,
Director, Programme on Health Effects of Global Environmental
Change, Johns Hopkins University, to be followed by a group of
regional and international experts.
Specific goals include:
* Inform health scientists, practitioners, and officials of the
impacts of climate variability (e.g. ENSO), and long-term climate
change in the Pacific islands region.
* Integrate health-relevant sectors (e.g., water resources,
agriculture and fisheries).
* Introduce strategies in coastal zone management as they relate
to sewage disposal and other health issues.
* Foster joint interdisciplinary research projects among local
participants, as well as developed/developing nation scientist
partnerships.
