Climate Conference Begins in Rarotonga Today
April 4, 2000
A week-long environmental conference today gets underway in the
Cook Islands capital, Rarotonga.
Pacific correspondent Kevin McQuillan reports, the conference
will focus on climate change and sea level rises:
400 scientists, government officials, policy makers and aid
donors will spend the week discussing the extent to which
Pacific countries are affected by greenhouse gas emissions,
which have affected the lifestyle and livelihoods of people in a
number of low lying islands, such as Kiribati, Tuvalu, as
traditional crop planting methods come threat. The conference is
being organised by the Apia-based South Pacific Regional
Environment Programme, which is aiming to set the agenda on
assessing climate change and sea level rises over the next five
years. SPREP spokesman Dr Mahendra Kumar says very little
greenhouse gas emissions come from the region: "But all
scientific evidence points to these countries being the bearing
the brunt of the impact as far as climate change is concerned."
