Small Island States to Query Climate Changes that Threaten
Existence
April 4, 2000
The Prime Minister of the Cook Islands says small island nations
around the world will no longer sit back and accept developments
which threaten their existence.
Dr Terepai Maoate has opened a major climate change conference
in Rarotonga, which is being attended by about 400 scientists,
officials and donor countries.
He predicted that small islands will ask questions about climate
change, the transhipment of hazardous waste, and unexplained
weather patterns which cause havoc on unprotected communities.
Dr. Maoate said the Pacific had been asked to live with nuclear
tests, nuclear waste and other hazardous materials being brought
through the region.
He says it's now appropriate for Pacific states to ask about
developments that could threaten tourism, food, water and
housing.
