Australia extends South Pacific Sea Level program
April 4, 2000
Australia has announced a new phase in its South Pacific Sea
Level and Climate monitoring project.
The aid program -- running since 1991 -- has helped eleven
Pacific Island countries to follow changes in the sea level.
Australia is to extend the project for another five years from
2001, at a cost of up to one-and-three-quarter million dollars
annually.
The Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, says it's a significant
response to South Pacific concerns about rising sea levels.
He says the new phase of the project will give more emphasis to
monitoring short and medium term climate change.
