UNDP APPROVES PROJECT IN TONGA UNDER ITS GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT
FACILITY
Mr. Romulo V. Garcia, Resident Representative of the United
Nations Development Programme based in Suva, Fiji, today
announced the approval of Global Environment Facility financing
for a project totalling US$ 325,000 for the Kingdom of Tonga to
assist the Government in meeting its obligations under the United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The Ministry of Lands, Survey and Natural Resources will execute
the project for a period of two and a half years.
The project enables the government to prepare its first national
communication to the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the
UNFCCC.
This will include:
· an inventory of greenhouse gases following the guidelines
adopted by the COP;
· an assessment of potential impacts of climate change in Tonga;
· an analysis of potential measures to abate the increase in
greenhouse gas emissions in Tonga and to adapt to climate change;
· preparation of a national action plan to address climate change
and its adverse impacts; and
· preparation of the first national communication of the Kingdom
of Tonga to the COP.
The project is also expected to enhance general awareness and
knowledge of climate change-related issues in the Kingdom of
Tonga as well as strengthening of dialogue, information exchange
and cooperation among all the relevant stakeholders including
governmental, non-governmental, academic and the private sectors.
